Frequently Asked Questions about Medical Conditions in Norway
How do I find a doctor for my health condition in Norway?
Select your health condition above to view recommended medical specialties, diagnostic procedures, and verified practitioners across Norway with online booking options.
Do I need a referral from my Fastlege to see a specialist for a condition?
Through the public healthcare system (hospitals and contracted avtalespesialister), yes - your Fastlege evaluates your symptoms and submits a digital referral via Helsenorge. For private clinics, you can book an appointment directly without any referral.
Are treatments and medications for chronic conditions covered by Helfo?
Yes. Consultations at public hospitals and approved specialists count toward the 2026 annual frikort cap of NOK 3,278. Once reached, medical care and approved medications on blue prescriptions (blå resept) are 100% covered for the remainder of the calendar year.
What should I do if my condition worsens acutely outside clinic hours?
If your symptoms flare up or worsen urgently when your GP is closed, call 116 117 to speak with your local municipal Legevakt (out-of-hours urgent clinic). For acute life threats, dial 113 immediately.
