Frequently Asked Questions About Doctors in Norway

How do I choose or change my Fastlege (regular GP) in Norway?

You can change your Fastlege up to two times per calendar year digitally via helsenorge.no using BankID. You can choose any doctor with open list capacity in your municipality or even across municipal borders.

Can I see a private doctor without a referral in Norway?

Yes. Private medical clinics in Norway (such as Aleris, Volvat, and Dr. Dropin) do not require a referral from a Fastlege. You pay out-of-pocket or via private health insurance.

How long does a standard Fastlege appointment last?

A standard consultation with a Fastlege is typically scheduled for 15 to 20 minutes. If you have multiple complex health issues, prioritize your top symptoms or inform the clinic when booking that a double consultation may be needed.

What is the consultation fee (egenandel) for a GP in Norway?

A standard GP consultation co-payment is generally between NOK 175 and NOK 320 (depending on whether blood tests or materials are needed). All qualifying co-payments count toward the 2026 annual frikort cap of NOK 3,278, after which care is 100% free.

Who gets free doctor visits in Norway?

Children under 16 years of age and pregnant women receiving routine antenatal pregnancy care are exempt from co-payments for primary healthcare consultations under Folketrygden.
