3

Fritt Behandlingsvalg

You can choose any public hospital or contracted private clinic nationwide to shorten wait times. Check live national wait times on Helsenorge.

4

Frequently Asked Questions About Norwegian Hospitals & Rights

What is Fritt behandlingsvalg (Free choice of hospital) in Norway?

Under Norwegian patient rights law (Pasient- og brukerrettighetsloven), all patients referred for specialized healthcare have the statutory right to choose which hospital or accredited private clinic in Norway they receive treatment at, regardless of where they live.

How long does a Norwegian hospital have to evaluate a GP referral?

Specialist hospital departments must evaluate every referral within 10 working days (Vurderingsgaranti). If accepted, you will receive a confirmed medical deadline for when treatment must begin.

Are travel costs to a hospital covered in Norway?

Yes. Travel to approved hospital consultations and treatments is reimbursed by Pasientreiser at standard rates, subject to a statutory co-payment deductible (which counts toward your annual frikort cap).

Can I choose a hospital outside my own health region (helseregion)?

Yes. You are free to choose any public hospital or contracted private clinic across Helse Sør-Øst, Helse Vest, Helse Midt-Norge, or Helse Nord. You can compare official waiting times on velgbehandlingssted.no or via Helsenorge.
